Tuolumne, CA – Feb. 6, 2012   The Association of California School Administrators has chosen Black Oak Casino as the 2011 Award Winner for Top Partner in Education Excellence for Region 7 of the statewide organization.  They were praised by regional Administrators for their “Exceptional leadership in managing and supporting school programs with a commitment to educational quality and student achievement.”  Region 7 of the ACSA includes California counties:  Amador, Calaveras, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne.

The Partners in Educational Excellence award goes to businesses and organizations that have a sustained and positive impact on student achievement.  Black Oak Casino has provided IT support to local schools including managing and installing servers and solving network issues.  Many Black Oak Team Members serve as mentors to high school seniors and their senior projects.  Casino staff also helps with “Hire Me First” employment interview programs, provides employment opportunities for educational interns, and provides leadership and education with Junior Achievement, athletic coaching, and many other student related educational activities.

Financial sponsorship by the Casino and Tribe is regularly given for many monthly requests for monetary assistance with academic and athletic opportunity for individual students.

Black Oak Casino’s Willow Creek Lounge confirms September 22, 2012 for the first appearance of San Francisco Psychedelic Soul/Funk Band the Monophonics

Psychedelic Soul, sometimes called black Rock, is a sub-genre of Soul music, which mixes the characteristics of Soul with Psychedelic Rock. It came to prominence in the late 1960s and continued into the 1970s, playing a major role in the development of Soul and Funk music.

Over the past seven years, Monophonics have staked their claim as one of California’s premier band’s. Raised amid the Bay Area’s rich musical culture, Monophonics has proudly carried on the tradition of music native to their hometown which flourished during the birth of psychedelia.

Monophonics were formed in 2005; originally a instrumental ensemble comprised of guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Myles O’Mahony, saxophonist Alex Baky, trumpeter Ryan Scott, and drummer Austin Bohlman, the band has recently added the dynamic soul vocals of keyboardist Kelly Finnigan. The result is a psychedelic soul & heavy funk sound, which harks back to the stylings of the late 60’s and early 70’s, all while keeping its feet planted in the present.

As a mainstay of San Francisco venues such as The Independent & Boom Boom Room, the Monophonics have created a national buzz and fervent local following, sharing the stage & bill with such names as Budos Band, Orgone, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Kings Go Forth, Soulive and many more. Their touring schedule has brought their signature rowdy, hard-hitting live set to over 400 dates from California up to Motown and down to Louisiana establishing themselves as yearly residents at the legendary New Orleans Jazz Festival. The band has also played some of the major music festivals on the west coast including High Sierra, Joshua Tree, Blacksheep Family Reunion, and Las Tortugas.

Already in 2011, the group has showcased their new sound with the release of a 7” entitled “Like Yesterday,” for Colemine Records. The record was recorded by Sergio Rios at Killion Sound and feature’s members of the Los Angeles based funk group Orgone. With the bands new sound, the 45 has already reached audiences across the US, Europe and Japan. Just recently in 2011, Monophonics have completed their third album to date entitled “In Your Brain,” lacing the sounds of the late 60’s/early 70’s dark psych soul with fuzz guitars, analog tape echo and reverbs, vintage keyboards, hard-driving drums and bass, funky horns and gritty vocals, which is a sonic testimony to the evolution of this six-piece unit.  Click below for a sample of their music.

Anyone who’s ever dreamed of being a karaoke superstar is invited to try out at Black Oak Casino for the Karaoke World Championships USA 2012, which is the only nationwide event sanctioned by the International Karaoke Authority located in Lahti, Finland.  Qualifying nights will be held Thursdays starting at 8pm on March 8^th and 22^nd, April 12^th and 26^th, and May 10^th in the Willow Creek Lounge at Black Oak Casino.  Winners will advance to the finals that will be held May 24^th at 8pm in the Willow Creek Lounge.  The state finals will also be held at Black Oak Casino on tentative dates of May 30^th and 31^st.

“If you’ve ever thought you might be a great karaoke singer, this is your big chance to become a star,” said Al O’Brien, marketing manager at Black Oak Casino.  “This will be a really great competition and we’re encouraging people to come out and join the fun.”

The top male and female winners from each qualifying night will also receive dinner for two at Black Oak Café or Mill Sports Bar and $25 in Free Play.  The top male and female winners of the finals will get dinner for two at Seven Sisters, $50 in free play, and advancement to the state competition.  Regional prizes are valued at more than $6,300 and include studio time and karaoke discs and equipment.  National prizes are valued at more than $16,000 and include studio time and custom song demos for the singers.

TUOLUMNE, CA – Country star Terry Clark will be returning to Black Oak Casino in February after her sold-out show at the casino last year.  Clark has had two platinum albums and six #1 hits, including “You’re Easy on the Eyes” and “Girls Lie Too.” 

On February 11^th, Chicano crooner Richard Bean will be performing with his band Sapo to celebrate the 40^th anniversary of his hit single “Suavecito,” a song which has been called “The Chicano National Anthem”  and is known as the ultimate Latino love song.

Other highlights include Blues star Tommy Castro, who won the 2008 Blues Music Award for Entertainer of the Year and Russell Moore and IIIrd Time Out, who are 4-time winners of the prestigious Vocal Group of the Year award from the International Bluegrass Music Association.
