The Prince Edward Island (PEI) cultured mussel industry is Canada’s top producer and exporter of rope cultured blue mussel. PEI has earned its reputation for high quality standards based on the diligence and pride of Island growers, processors and industry stakeholders.

Prince Edward Island’s mussel culture industry has grown from a mere 88,000 pounds (40 tonnes) in 1980 to a staggering 37.6 million pounds (17, 052 tonnes) last year. The industry has become a vital sector of the local economy. The Island’s mussel farmers lead the way producing approximately eighty percent of Canadian mussel production and 71 percent of North American production.

The PEI mussel farming industry uses the longline system. Mussels are held in suspension in socks (mesh sleeves) tied to anchored or moored buoy rope. Because they are suspended in the water column, the mussels have greater access to food, cleaner shells and are further away from bottom dwelling predators. The result is a high quality mussel renowned for its superior flavour.

The Pro Bowlers Association Western Region will return to Black Oak Lanes for the 7th annual Battle at Black Oak Lanes.

The tournament will held the weekend of May 18 to 20, 2012.

TUOLUMNE, CA – Country favorites Restless Heart will be coming to Black Oak Casino in April.  The band has had six Number One hits, 26 singles on the Billboard country charts, and four albums which were certified Gold.  Their hit songs include “I’ll Still Be Loving You,” “Why Does It Have to Be (Wrong or Right),” and “A Tender Lie.” 

On April 19th, nationally known comedian Mark Pitta will take the stage.  Pitta has appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, and has made guest appearances on Mad About You and Third Rock From the Sun.

Other highlights include American Blues guitar star Jimmy Thackery who released his latest album last year and on April 21^st, Steel Breeze, who is known for their hit song “You Don’t Want Me Anymore.”

Black Oak Casino’s effort to raise money for cancer research this month is on its way to being a big success.  In just two weeks, the casino has sold more than $1,400 in cancer awareness related items such as pink travel coffee mugs, pink ribbon paper cutouts, and pink roses on Friday evening date night at Seven Sisters, with all proceeds going toward cancer research.  In addition, more than 1,000 people have participated in the free weekly $3,000 slot tournament, with a $1 donation made to cancer research for every player that registers.  The casino is dedicating the entire month of March to the fight against cancer in this special Play for the Cure promotion. 

“We’re committed to hitting our goal of raising $10,000 for cancer research, so if we fall short in the last week, we will double the donation amount to $2 per person for anyone playing in the slot tournament,” said Ron Patel, general manager of Black Oak Casino.  “In addition to this money, Black Oak Casino will also be donating more than $5,000 to various Sonora and Modesto cancer research fundraising efforts such as Relay for Life and Daffodil Days.” 

The free $3,000 slot tournament to benefit cancer research is being held from noon to 4pm every Sunday in March.  Also on Sundays, Black Oak Lanes will have a pink-headed bowling pin promotion, and there will be educational booths on cancer awareness in the Black Oak Casino’s Smoke Free Skywalk, including Sonora Regional Medical Center with Diagnostic Imaging and the Center for Breast Health, Sierra Regional Home Health Care, and Tuolumne County Relay for Life.
