8th Annual California Indian Market

More than 40 Exhibitors from Tribes all over the State will be at California Indian Market on May 15th

The 8th Annual California Indian Market will be held on Saturday, May 15th from 10am until Dusk at Black Oak Casino’s Heritage Park in Tuolumne. The market will feature a wide variety of Native American products for sale, as well as demonstrations by California Native American Artists. The art of basketry, acorn processing, and soapstone carving will all be demonstrated as well as Native American games.

Admission is free to the event, and there will be over 40 exhibitors from more than a dozen different tribes throughout California. This market is the first of its kind in California, featuring only California native traditional and contemporary artwork.

The California Indian Market has grown substantially since it started back in 2003, and now has more than double the number of exhibitors. The market has also become increasingly popular, and hundreds of people attended last year. In addition to artwork for sale and demonstrations, Indian Tacos will be available as well as books on the Native People of California.

This year’s exhibitors include two artists who were National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) award-recipients. Basketmaker Julia Parker’s work has been featured at the National Museum of the American Indian, the Heard Museum, and the National Museum of Natural History. Craftsman George Blake makes a variety of Native American artwork including elk antler purses, headdresses, sinew-back bows, and canoes.

The California Indian Market is sponsored by The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians and Black Oak Casino.
