American Idol winner Taylor Hicks will be performing at Black Oak Casino on August 17th. Hicks achieved fame when he won the 5th season of American Idol in 2006, and his single “Do I Make You Proud” debuted at #1 and was later certified gold. Hicks debut album was certified platinum and he has since released two more albums and appeared in concerts worldwide.
At age 29, Hicks was the oldest contestant to ever win the title of American Idol and his unique take on southern soul, R&B, country and blues has given him a devout following of fans who have been dubbed “The Soul Patrol.” Hicks was born in Alabama, had a difficult childhood after his parents’ divorce, and his hair started turning gray at age 14. Hicks says he turned to soul and blues music for solace and taught himself how to play electric guitar.
His personal twist of fate came when he was in New Orleans, the night before Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005. With his flight cancelled, he was given a free airplane voucher. Hicks quickly used the ticket to travel to Las Vegas, where coincidentally American Idol auditions were being held. He eventually went on to the finale which made television history as one of the most watched television programs of the decade when 36.4 million viewers tuned in and 63 million votes were cast to make Hicks the winner.
