Men Recognized as Best Cowboy Poets in the World Coming to Black Oak Casino on February 11th

Waddie Mitchell, who has appeared on The Tonight Show numerous times, turned down his first invitation because it was calving time and he had never heard of Johnny Carson

Two of the world's best cowboy poets and musicians will be performing at Black Oak Casino this month. Don Edwards and Waddie Mitchell will be collaborating for a unique Cowboy Poetry Gathering, featuring original poems and songs straight from the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, NV. Edwards and Mitchell get their material from real life experiences, both having spent decades as working cowboys in the West.

Waddie Mitchell, who People magazine calls "America's best known cowboy poet" has performed internationally from New York to Australia and was featured on The Tonight Show numerous times. He heard about the first phoned invitation to be on his show from his neighbor who drove 40 miles to deliver the message to Mitchell in his remotely-based site, and returned with a "No Thanks" because it was calving time and Mitchell had never heard of Johnny Carson.

Mitchell has since appeared on Larry King Live, Good Morning America, TNN, The History Channel, PBS, and BBC. He has also been featured in People, Life, The New York Times, USA Today, Fortune, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, and the Official Program for Super Bowl XXX. The 2002 Cultural Olympiad commissioned him to write a commemorative poem for the Salt Lake City Winter Games. His offering, "That No Quit Attitude," was so well received that it was used in the "Welcome to Salt Lake" film, in schools and libraries, on Delta Airlines, the Olympic website, and in many publications including the Official Souvenir Program of the 2002 Winter Games.

Grammy nominee Don Edwards, who the New York Daily News calls "the country's purest cowboy singer," is a two time winner of the prestigious Western Heritage Wrangler Award from the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Edwards also received the Western Music Association's Performer of the Year award and appeared in the Robert Redford movie The Horse Whisperer. Edwards is known for never succumbing to temptation to glamorize or romanticize the West, and his material deals with bad weather, petty motivation, sadness, nostalgia, and longing as parts of the cowboy landscape.

Don Edwards and Waddie Mitchell will be performing at the Black Oak Casino on Wednesday, February 11th at 8pm. If you are interested in interviewing them or running a promotion in conjunction with this event, please contact Cynthia Fidel at 559-472-7128.
