18, 2006) Join the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians
in a celebration of community and tradition at the 40
th Annual Acorn Festival on Saturday and Sunday, September
9 - 10.
One of the highlights of the festival is the popular “Hand
Games Tournament”. This traditional game-of-chance is played
while singing spirited gambling songs. Teams compete in
guessing the “bones”. Games can last for a few minutes or
for days. Prizes for this year's tournament include a $3,000
purse for 1 st place, $2,500 for 2 nd and $2,000 for 3 rd
.
In addition to the tournament excitement, the festival
will feature traditional dancers, an Inter-Tribal Pow Wow,
native arts and crafts and a wide variety of food and fun
for the whole family.
The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians mission is to “Build
a Sense of Community Through Sharing”. This includes sharing
of knowledge and tradition that goes way back to 1910 when
the Tuolumne Rancheria was established. It was originally
set up as a reservation for homeless natives.
